The Shawnigan classroom is an exciting place! Artists and writers share their craft, Model United Nations leaders solve the issue of global warming, business teams make sushi and compete for top sales, national level athletes share their training secrets, scientists release salmon into the local streams, critical thinking combines with the Socratic method, the field hockey pitch becomes a launching pad for rockets, sustainability is practiced by tending an organic garden, the beauty of the night sky comes into focus through the lens of a research telescope. And every Friday night the Entrepreneurship class at the Stag Café cooks up the best burger ever made on a high school campus.
Shawnigan Lake School provides a learning community that fosters personal excellence for each and every student. In an environment that combines the best of a traditional education with the contemporary skills and attitudes of 21st Century learning, where the structured classroom is balanced with enquiry-based discussion, and independent initiatives with collaborative thinking, Shawnigan students experience a rich and rigorous Academic Program that has a relevance in today’s world.
The Shawnigan classroom is a respectful place. Our learning community, built first of all on the powerful relationships between teachers and students, brings those values that are key to our school into the classroom. In a student centered environment, young learners at Shawnigan develop confidence because they are comfortable taking intellectual risks, leading discussions and responding to their peers, and engaging in creative problem solving.

In our boarding school environment we take advantage of the classrooms that are beyond the classroom, the relationships that include more than teacher-student and the academic day that extends further than the limits of any regular school day schedule. “24/7” means we are able to ensure every student gets the necessary support to achieve his or her academic potential.
What does that support look like? Afternoon, evening and weekend tutorials, in classrooms, in dormitory common rooms, in the Dining Hall, Student Centre or Staff Room, where teachers and students engage in one on one or small group discussions to clarify or confirm learning. Two evening programs--the Writing Centre and the Learning Centre—that offer tutorial support in all subject areas and are available to all students in all grades. A Peer Tutoring program in Math four days a week that allows our strongest students to become better learners by teaching others; and the challenges of math to be demystified by a classmate. The power generated by collaboration and ideas sharing, when so many enthusiastic young people and teachers work together in a common space, is inspiring.
The Shawnigan teacher is an inspirational educator. Living and teaching in a boarding school is not for the faint of heart: it is not for the person who is really only interested in just getting the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Shawnigan’s commitment to instructional excellence goes beyond the mere delivery of material. Our teachers share a genuine interest in the success of young people and they make it their mission to recognize and draw out the potential in each and every student. Delivery of the academic program is flexible, relevant and in line with current best practices; that means Shawnigan teachers have the knowledge, skills, attributes and habits of mind of great teachers. Great teachers provide for great learning. And great learning creates transformational experiences in the classroom.
|Our academic program is built on the shoulders of committed, passionate, intelligent men and women of character.|

A Shawnigan grad is someone you want to admit to your university or college. Well-trained in the demands of community living, Shawnigan students know how to get along with others, how to balance their academic commitments, and how to get involved in activities outside of the classroom in ways that will support their academic advancement. Setting aside time for focused study, working collaboratively with classmates and being a leader in the classroom all come easily to our students. Why? Because these are things they practice here at Shawnigan.
A Shawnigan grad is someone you want to hire. The qualities every work environment values are those same qualities students learn at Shawnigan. We encourage a positive attitude and a service orientation to work. We honour dedication and loyalty to the team and we celebrate the achievements of the individual. Our grads are confident with technology and they know how important it is to be connected to the world so that those global issues that touch us all are understood.
|Through the benefits of a diverse learning environment, Shawnigan teaches independence, competence and resilience. A Shawnigan education has transfer power into the workplace.|
