Rowers off to Henley Royal
Shawnigan rowers are enjoying another fine season. The recent Shawnigan Regatta produced several wins for the School, including a first-ever back to back win for the boys and girls first eights - the girls coming from a boat length behind in the last hundred meters to win on the final stroke of the race as you can see in the photo to the left - a 0.3 sec victory. These crews along with several others fresh off regatta wins including the junior girls 4, sr boys lwt 4, and lwt girls 8+ are off to the National Championships ("Schoolboys" to many of you), where they hope to have another excellent regatta. The Shawnigan Crew has been the top independent school at the championships for several years now. The highlight of the season looks to be a trip by our undefeated boys eight to the Henley Royal Regatta at the beginning of July in England. Once a regular feature on the Shawnigan calendar, this regatta is seen as an unofficial world championship of sorts for high school crews. Our boys have had an amazing season thusfar and we are sure that they will represent the School well at this prestigious event. Although none of our school crews has been to Henley in many years, Shawnigan was represented last year. Rowing Canada’s World Champions, unable to race as a national team due to event regulations, represented Shawnigan in winning the Grand Challenge Cup - wearing the School racing uniform as tribute to all that the School has done for them over the years. Any of you with Henley memories or if you would like to send your best wishes to the crew, please leave a comment below!
