Shawnigan Rowers to Represent BC at Canada Summer Games
For two weeks in August, many of Canada's top school-age athletes will descend on its smallest province, Prince Edward Island, for the 2009 Canada Summer Games. The crew competing for British Columbia in the rowing events will feature four Shawnigan alumni, and one current student, competing for their share of the gold and the chance to be recognized as National Champions.
The Men's team features Jason Cartwright '08, Brendan Downey '09, and Rory Rees '09. Jason and Rory are no strangers to elite-level rowing as both young men were members of Shawnigan's 2008 Henley Royal Regatta Championship-winning crew. Jason has completed his first year of studies at Temple University, while Rory will begin his first year at the University of British Columbia in September. Brendan, meanwhile, counts a victory in the premier event of the Hungerford Cup Regatta amongst his many achievements during his career at Shawnigan, and will attend the University of Victoria in the fall.
The Women's entry at the Summer Games features two Shawnigan athletes, Katie Dick '08, and Maylies L. '10. Katie is currently attending and competing for Washington State University, while Maylies is Captain of Rowing and a vital part of the defending National Secondary School Champion Women's Eight in 2009/10, her final year at Shawnigan. Adding to the Shawnigan flavour in the Women's competition is coach Danielle Beare, who forgoes her summer vacation to take on the task of guiding these talented young women to success.
Congratulations to Ms. Beare and all of the Shawnigan athletes - the School wishes you all the very best for a successful and memorable competition!
