Headmaster's Random Thoughts During International Week
If there's any truth to the saying that, "pride comes before a fall" then I'm going to be tumbling freefall in the weeks to come because I am so proud of our school community and, beyond that, of being a part of a country that actually lives the notions of multiculturalism that we promote. Unless a few narrow-minded despots derail the future world then we are bound on an irreversible course towards globalisation where respect and co-operation will be the norm and people will be expected to move seamlessly between countries and cultures. That's the essence of what's going on here this week and, of course, it fits perfectly with our general approach to life and education. Is it only in Scotland that they have a saying along the lines of having to know where you're from to know where you're going - probably not? That's the essence of this fabulous week and what a series of opportunities it has again provided for awareness, interaction, amazement and just sheer fun and laughter. Happy to fall if that's the price I have to pay for this privilege!

Topic: Duxbury Chapel Presentation
This past Saturday, the boys of Duxbury performed during the Chapel Service as the House celebrates its tenth anniversary this October. The theme of this presentation was “Unity”. The service consisted of hymns, speeches, musical offerings and even a reading from “Lord of the Rings”. The boys had loads of fun with the performance, and were able to truly show the importance and advantages of being a team. As the year goes on, Duxbury continues to bond tighter as a House.

Shawnigan Alumni Year-end Salute
Shake a hand, raise a glass and share good wishes for the season and for 2010 with other SLOB's from your past!
As always, it is the first Thursday in December, which is the 3rd this year.
This is not a spouse/partner-included event. Not that we have anything against our better halves, but the idea is to have at least one time in the year where it is just us getting together.
We are again gathering at Doolin's Pub, at the south east corner of Nelson and Granville. I have reserved our usual tables starting at 4:30 p.m. ('til closing or last standing) just so we start with some space before the crowds roll in.
Santa (aka Roland '72) will have few special gifts from the School for lucky Alums.
I have also arranged for group rates if you want to book a room for the night in the Comfort Inn above. $79. Call 604-605-4333 and ask for the SLOB's Group rate.
Cheers,
Doug

Unsung Heroes
Today's talk at the HM Gathering was about kindness and unsung heroes and, in so many ways, those two go together. I asked the school to think about who was voluntarily responsible for a whole host of 'little things' which all go to make up some part of the fabric of life here, from the flowers in the chapel to feeding the school cats! Random acts of kindness are so necessary for the enlightened community, but so are anonymous acts of kindness. There is a power in knowing that someone is selfless enough to care and not to be bothered about getting the credit. It's a power that restores faith in the world and increases both optimism and hope. So, although it sounds like an oxymoron of some sort, we should celebrate our unsung heroes when get the chance. I have challenged the School to let me know about any that have come to their attention. Just as a powerful engine only works if all of its parts contribute to the whole, then so does a real caring community - there are so many small and unnoticed kindnesses and courtesies, but that's what makes the difference!
