Topic: A Few Little-known Shawnigan Facts
There are many aspects of Shawnigan Life of which we are not aware. For example did you know that we go through 320 4-litre jugs of milk a week? Here are some other Shawnigan facts that many people don't know about:
• We use the equivalent of 466 rolls of toilet paper a week
• We eat about 80 loaves of bread a week
• We have an accumulation of about 576 tennis balls
• We have 200 new chairs with armrests for the new Theatre
• We have used 1912 reams of paper so far this year
• We eat about 3600 cookies per week
• The internet traffic on June 1st was 112 Gigabytes (including downloads)
• We have approximately 1000 foldable purple chairs
I hope some of these facts are new and interesting to you!

Topic: Four Square
Four Square is becoming very popular at Shawnigan. This fun and extremely addicting game is storming across the campus and seniors and juniors all over are stating to on the court, each of the four squares has its own rank and is occupied by a single player. The ranks are arranged so that the highest ranking square is positioned diagonally across the court from the lowest ranking square. The strongest player "The King" serves the ball. The player in square one will have to work his way up the squares to the Kings square. Almost all the Houses have their own four square court made out of duct tape! We won't be surprised if there will be an Interhouse Four Square competition in the future!

The Power of 'Live'
One of the best things you can do in your youth is to perform some live theatre and the next best thing is to go and see it. There's something that can affect you in ways not possible with movies and recordings when the moments are living and real and you catch them! Maybe too, it's the pact that you have to make tacitly when you enter a theatre for a live show; you allow yourself to accept the theatrical illusion and you suspend your disbelief. Emotions can hang in the air and both joys and sadnesses be felt more keenly. Theatre can also cause you to think, call into question your views and force you to articulate them in a way that will stand up to scrutiny. All of that is very good for young people, but it's equally vital for adults who can be too set in their ways and opinions. What is also very beneficial about having the courage to take on a stage role is the effect on a person's self-confidence. As the beautiful plaque in our new Theatre Foyer says : " The enemy of art is fear" and the conquering of that fear can lead to myriad benefits for all of us.

Shawnigan Alum to Play Rugby with Europe's Best!
Shawnigan alumnus Matt Evans '06 has signed a contract to play rugby with the Newport-Gwent Dragons of the Mangers League next season!
Evans, a member of Ripley's House and captain of the 1st XV in 2006, has spent the past few seasons training with and playing for Hartpury College's elite Rugby Academy in Gloucestershire, England. He has represented Canada at various age-grade levels and debuted for the Canadian National Team in October of 2008 against Wales. Matt has gone on to represent Canada in nine internationals, recording three tries in the process, most recently scoring in Canada's 48-6 victory over Uruguay in the opening match of the 2010 Churchill Cup.
Equally comfortable at fly-half and fullback, Matt will provide much needed cover at both positions for the Dragons, who will be looking to build on a seventh place finish last year in hopes of qualifying for postseason play in 2011. Matt will also be focusing on improving his play as he builds toward the 2011 Rugby World Cup, a competition in which he figures to feature prominently for the Canadian side.
Congratulations to Matt - we look forward to following you next season and beyond!

Sunny Skies and Great Fun at DHL Golf Classic!
June 3, 2010 proved to be another great day in the sun for Shawnigan golfers. A one-day reprieve from weeks of rain was a welcome stroke of luck. A spirited collection of 139 alumni and friends took to the links in what proved to be the largest turnout in tournament history.
Tournament rule changes this year, brought about to level the playing field for men and women contestants by putting men at the blue tees, proved to be a challenge for some and a breath of fresh air for others. After all, winning the coveted Gold Jacket is not just a walk in the park!
Master of Ceremonies and Golf Committee Chairman Chris Cooper ‘88 guided the apres golf festivities. The highlight as always, was a very entertaining and informative State of the School presentation by Headmaster David Robertson. This year featuring his newest toy…..(not Nigel)….an iPad.
The 2010 Gold Jacket winners with a well-deserved score of 61 were: Vince Semenuk ‘03, Patty Allard ‘02, Brad Johnstone ‘02, Jordon Dew ‘02. Well done lads!
In other skill competions, Chris Cooper ‘88 was "King of the Flat Stick", longest drive winners were Ray Schuler and Mia Bolton ‘05, and KP honours went to Marilyn Chambers and Patrick Weeks.
Winners in the Good Fortune competition included the ecstatic (and now wealthier) Don Bull ‘81, winner of the 50/50 draw and a cool $1,170, as well as Doug Anderson ’72 and David Robinson ’95.

First to take the podium before the start of the evening portion of the tournament was Steve Housser ‘67.
Steve gave a heartfelt tribute to Colin Yorath ‘59 who passed away suddenly earlier in the day. Colin was one of the founders of the Annual DHL Golf Tournament and a strong supporter of the School. We will not forget Colin. A standing salute to our good friend. Our condolences to Colin's wife Joy and daughter Stephanie.

Awesome
There's a whole way of looking at the world that causes us to find joy in the simplest of things and it's engagingly and effectively conveyed in the Book of Awesome by Neil Pasricha. The premise is that there's a multitude of satisfying moments to be felt when we allow ourselves to savour them. It takes the "glass is half full...." philosophy to new lengths and in doing so it reinforces a way of looking at life that is ultimately much more fun. After reading it, it's hard not to find yourself searching out those moments where you too are quietly declaring,"awesome"! Talking of that, I've just returned from a weekend of awesome moments watching our Senior rugby boys win their second successive provincial championship while our rowers surpassed expectations by making no fewer than 8 finals at the demanding National Championships, bringing home 4 medals in the process! More of that elsewhere but it certainly does qualify as awesome!

Topic: Shawnigan Talents
Although everyone at Shawnigan is known to be very multi-talented, you would never guess some of the amazing things people can do. There are so many talents that are not shown by the students because they are so busy keeping up with the Shawnigan lifestyle. Max R. is a grade 11 student at Shawnigan is an amazing snowboarder and is sponsored by Burton Snowboard Company because of it. Another amazing and rarely shown talent is Drew M.'s ability to BMX bike and do unbelievable tricks. Even though Shawnigan has such a busy lifestyle, people can still keep up amazing skills that are unseen.
