Field Hockey

Field hockey at Shawnigan – A flagship sport comes home

Think new, think fresh, think Field Hockey! New challenges, new opportunities and new commitment - the Girls’ Field hockey program at Shawnigan offers it all together and guaranties fun, competition and team spirit!

Shawnigan is proud to promote Field Hockey at a renewed, high and challenging level. An outstanding group of coaches from Canada, Zimbabwe and Germany is looking forward to welcoming any girls from Grade 8 through 12 interested in our competitive and demanding, yet fun team sport. Our artificial all-year-round turf as well as the grass field just above it are home to our Grade 8s as well as our Junior and Senior teams.

First term is competitive Field Hockey season. No time to lose, no time for hesitation. All our teams from Grade 8 through 12 participate in games competing with other independent and public schools.

While our Grade 8s benefit from a series of matches against local schools over the fall term, our Junior team consisting of Grade 9s and 10s participates in a Vancouver Island League. Their season has two major highlight tournaments: the ISA Championships and the Vancouver Island Junior Championship.

Our Senior team also participates in a Vancouver Island League with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the Vancouver Island Championship and continuing on to the coveted BC "AA" Provincial Championship. Over the course of the season, the Seniors have many opportunities to hone their skills competing with a variety of regional teams from all over BC at tournaments such as the Friendship Cup, ISA Championship, and the Bridgman Cup to name just a few.

During the winter term our program offers Indoor Hockey, a very popular, faster and even more exciting variation of Field Hockey, played 6-on-6 with side-boards in the gym. Athletes as well as spectators love this thrilling game, which is sometimes almost too fast to watch. In order to compete with other teams, the SLS Indoor team participates in several Indoor tournaments on Vancouver Island as well as in Vancouver.

Third term is skill term. Fitness, individual and tactical skills need to be developed in order to be well prepared for the following school year’s competitive season. All players benefit from intense and individual practice sessions – any remaining question will be answered, any need will be fed by your coaches. In addition, the athletes can register in the external Cowichan Valley Field Hockey Spring League and have the opportunity to play not only with other local girls, but also with guys, who complete the mixed teams (3 boys on each side) in this very special competition. Fun is guaranteed.

Be part of a renewed, yet old and successful tradition at Shawnigan – Join the program and play Field Hockey!
