Shawnigan Junior Squash Open
The inaugural Shawnigan Junior Open was held 17-19th September in the new Sportsplex. This Squash BC sanctioned tournament attracted many accomplished players from BC, Alberta, Washington and California. The draws were very competitive and made for some closely contested and exciting matches.
A highlight was the Girls' Gold event where Ashley T of Shawnigan (Gr. 12 from France) played very well to win the title in convincing fashion, beating the BC no. 1 and Canada no. 3 junior player. She was awarded the Monk Office Cup. Tyler O of Victoria, No. 1 Under 17 in Canada, was the worthy recipient of the Gudewill Cup in the Boys' Gold event. Tommy H (SLS) won the Boys' Bronze category. Kelsey M took first place in the Girls' Bronze, with Claire W as runner-up. Duncan M was the winner of the Boys' Silver division. Dorian L-W, Justin M and Chris M, all of SLS, had strong performances in the Boys' Gold event.
The support of the School parents is always appreciated, and this tournament was no exception. Thanks go to all who came from near (Shawnigan) and far (Saskatoon), and everywhere in between. Special mention should be made of Brian McGaw who worked tirelessly on the tournament committee to ensure an exceptional squash event for both the players and spectators.
The Shawnigan Squash programme is indebted to the following sponsors who contributed so generously in support of this event:
• Founding Sponsors and Shawnigan Alumni, Nick (1966) and Peter (1968) Gudewill. Not only have they contributed to Shawnigan in many areas, but also to the development and promotion of Squash in British Columbia.
• James McKenzie and Monk Office for their generous contribution, including some wonderful prizes.
• Wayne and Caroll Taiji, of the Taiji Brand Group who gave so unstintingly of their time, expertise and experience.
Thanks are also due to many other sponsors for their generosity, time and skills:
