Sr. Boys Qualify for Provincials
What an adventure for the Senior Boys Basketball team who qualified for the AA Provincial
Championships—a first for the School in 35 years. A victory over Cedar on Thursday (79-72), followed by a loss to Brentwood on Friday (52-66) put the team on the backdoor side of this double-knockout draw for the final berth. At 10:00 am on Saturday, the boys had a convincing 84-50 win over Mark Isfeld. Pat E. led the scoring with 32 points, Shavaan S. added another 22 points, and Lukas B. had 19 rebounds and 16 points.
After a little food, some rest and a game tape viewing session, the boys had to gather themselves for a 5:30 re-match with Cedar who had also won their cross-over match against Ladysmith. With the final qualifying spot on the line, the team found themselves down 36-37 at half-time. In the third quarter, the boys put on a strong defensive effort led by Howard Y. and Will T. and gained a 10-point lead heading into the fourth. They stayed composed and took the game 71-60. Luis O. had consistent numbers with 11 points and a handful of key offensive rebounds. Shavaan S. scored 23 of his total 37 points in the second half and pulled down 24 rebounds. He was named to the 1st All-Star Team. Pat E. contributed 13 points to the victory and for his tournament scoring was named to the 2nd All-Star Team.
The team would like to thank the Shawnigan families who came to support their efforts and the many who sent their congratulations and best wishes.
