Girls Rugby vs Ladysmith
The Senior Rugby Girls' League opener was an encouraging start to the 2010 season. The result was never in doubt from the opening kick-off
where Shawnigan put together a number of phases that resulted in a near scoring chance. They never let up and their constant pressure on Ladysmith caused all sorts of turnovers. Territorially, the game was very lopsided with Shawnigan in the Ladysmith half most of the game. The result could have been completely lopsided if Shawnigan had capitalized on their opportunities. Despite the amount of possession Shawnigan struggled to finish, errant passes being the culprit on numerous occasions. One has to keep in mind that this was our first full outing. There were a number of strong performances, notably Lizzie, filling in for Jules who is being recruited by Western University, Hilary playing a solid game in the lineout, and Eva, who probably touched the ball more than anyone on the field. Our back row is coming together nicely with Shannon running very strongly from the base of the scrum and both Morgan and Chloe are causing havoc at the breakdowns. Our front row was far too strong for the opposition with Emilie, Rachel, and Emma making up the front engine room. They really haven't been tested yet and maybe this will be the case all season. Tamlyn, a newcomer in the forwards, has shown tremendous signs of becoming a good lock. Her work rate and knowledge of the game are helping her transition to the lock position. Rachel is starting to run stronger and was a handful in the game. Brittany, our speedster had many scintillating runs at fullback and clearly needs to get her hands on the ball more often. Our wingers ran well and are quickly learning that they need to take a bigger role at the breakdown.
Coaches, Snihur and Hall are very encouraged by both the style and intensity of play that the girls are using on the field.
