David Hutchison
Recently, "Hutch" reflected on his own very positive experience as a boarding student at Upper Canada College in Ontario, which in part inspired him to work at Shawnigan. "As a result of my boarding school experience I have been a teacher, a House Director, and a fund raiser at Shawnigan Lake School. I am sure that I would have done well at a public school. So why was boarding school worth it? I lived in an environment that supported me and celebrated my strengths. I had teachers who would excite me about learning, and then remain on the football field with us until dark, before seeing us yet again in the evening in the dorms. Learning was everywhere, and the lessons went far beyond the pages of a textbook."
In addition to having been House Director, Head of Rowing and teaching Calculus, AP Computer Science, and Grade 8 Math, as well as having been Director of the Annual Fund, David is now Director of Advancement. He earned a degree in Human Biology from the University of Toronto where continued on to earn a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology. Subsequently he has completed two years of study toward a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology at both the University of Toronto and at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Married to Jill (who shares his passion for teaching and coaching) he has one daughter, Jessica, and a son, Matthew. Hutch and Jill were married in the Shawnigan Chapel. Their wedding ceremony included having the Lonsdale's House Hymn sung by 20 Lonsdale's boys who made a special trip to campus during their summer vacation to be part of the ceremony. Also on hand for this occasion were 10 of Hutch's rowers -- a "family" experience indeed. In his spare time he plays goalie on a local men's ice hockey team.
