My Days at Shawnigan

My time at Shawinigan has been short so far, but the memories and the fun times that I have already had will last me a lifetime. The first thing that I saw when I came to the School to drop my brothers off in 2007 were the huge gates! And since I was only nine at the time, I was already scared. But, once I got out of the car and met everyone, I felt right at home (until I had to leave a few hours later and my brothers got to stay!). There was some kind of magic in the air every time I came to Shawnigan.

International Week

A lot of preparation was put into International Week, but it was well worth it in the end. Having never experienced an International Week at Shawnigan, I did not know what to expect. I was certainly not expecting to play a competitive series of dodgeball games or dance a Scottish jig in front of the entire school. Whatever I was expecting, it did not prepare me for the immense feeling of motivation demonstrated all week – the motivation to show everyone why each group was unique.

The Ask

Winter falls fast in Shawnigan Lake, and with winter comes Snowfest, the annual school ball. Ripley's House is entrenched in a craze of 40 young men trying to find a date for this prestigious event. It seems as though the more the outlandish and creative "the ask" the better here at Shawinigan. It’s amazing to see the motivation and effort that is shown by boys all across campus in order to get a date. Several have interrupted entire school meals to get down on one knee and ask. Others have spent hours making signs, while others have written songs.

Model UN

One of the more interesting things that I am undertaking right now is a project in Socials for all Grade 10 students to participate in the Model UN. The Model UN gives students a chance to experience what the United Nations is like. At Shawnigan, Model UN is normally a Fine Art. In Grade 10, all the Socials classes are going to try to simulate what the Model UN group does. This is the most interesting academic project I have done in Term 1 at Shawnigan.
