Shawnigan Welcomes Tour de Rock

Ali H., Head of School, addressed the "cops for cancer" when they stopped at Shawnigan during Tour de Rock:

It brightens up my day every year when the tour de rock honours us with their presence at our school. It amazes me to hear what they do for their organization, and what we in return do as a community to help build and grow their fund. Since grade 8, I have experienced standing by the edge of the road, watching as these amazing riders come through our campus. I would always stretch out my arm as far as I could just to clap maybe one or two of the riders that went by. I think I did this because I thought that what they were doing was something so cool. Having the opportunity to ride around the Island raising awareness and telling their stories. This is why, this year, it brings a smile to my face to talk about the commitment and pride that we all share for the involvement with Cops for Cancer. I would like to congratulate all of you individually for making a difference. The sacrifices for this cause that you have made are outstanding; from shaving your head, to riding around the Island, to raising peoples’ awareness.

People may be struggling to realize why we are involved in these types of things, but to me it is obvious. To know that we are raising money to help kids with cancer get away from their worries, and spend time at Camp Good Times is probably making a big difference in their lives; isn’t that what we as kids should do for other kids? Unfortunately, cancer touches all of us, so making a contribution now will only help us all as we fight this terrible disease. Maybe some day we will find a cure for cancer, and hopefully that will be the day that we will no longer need Camp Good Times. However, until then, I hope that this community and these people in front of me will keep making a difference until that day will come.

From the profits that we will make from the dance, the Red Serge Dinner, and any other donations, we will hopefully give something to the camp that will make a change in some of those kids’ lives. Before I invite Lucien, our Deputy Head of School, to present you with a check that will show our gratitude, I would just like to say another thank you. A thank you for not only brightening up my day, but the lives of those kids at camp good times.
