Senior girls aim for Islands

Volleyball team strides toward playoffs

The Senior Girls Volleyball Team is preparing for the North Island Championships after several confidence-building tests.

The squad competed at a high-end tournament at GP Vanier School in Courtenay Oct. 14-15, advancing to the championship side of the draw for the first time in recent memory and earning matchups against some of the top schools in the Province.

The girls ventured to Brentwood College School on Oct. 20 for a showcase game in front of a huge crowd. "The showcase game was an outstanding event," says Head Coach Eric Venables, after dropping two close games to Brentwood. "Shawnigan fans showed incredible support and the team never faltered, even when the fans were at their loudest. It was a major confidence booster to compete in a game like that with one of the best teams on the island."

The girls have a few league games left as they attempt to qualify for the Island Championships. The North Island tournament runs Nov. 14-15, with Shawnigan needing to improve by one spot on last year's fifth place finish to advance to the Island tournament.
