Weekend hockey update

Shawnigan teams stay close to home
While many Shawnigan students were enjoying a historic skate on Lake Omar, four Shawnigan teams returned to rink for the first regular season games of 2017.

Varsity Girls:

Shawnigan's Varsity Girls team enjoyed home ice for the final time this season.

The girls hosted Okanagan Hockey Academy for a three-game set, winning two of three.

On Friday night, the team paid tribute to two graduating players, presenting flowers and plaques to Delaney A. and Ashley M. in front of a crowd at the Charlie Purdey Arena.

The girls lost Friday's matchup 4-2, but proceeded to win 3-1 on Saturday and 4-0 on Sunday, with both Delaney and Ashley scoring in both games.

Midget Varsity:

It was Shawnigan against Shawnigan — Black against Gold — Friends and classmates facing off, as Shawnigan's two Midget Varsity teams played against one another.

On Friday afternoon, the Varsity Black team earned a 9-1 victory — not a huge surprise given the disparity in the standings.

However, Varsity Gold provided one of the upsets of the season on Saturday. Carl S. made 50 saves, Matt K. and Kieran K. both scored twice and Riley B. added three assists as the Gold squad earned a momentous 5-2 triumph.

Midget Prep:

The Midget Prep team stayed on Vancouver Island, facing rival Pacific Coast Academy twice at Westhills Arena.

On Saturday, Derek K. made 23 saves and Jackson D. recorded a hat trick as Shawnigan earned a 4-0 victory. On Sunday, Jackson's powerplay goal late in the second period held up as the winner, as Shawnigan won 2-1.
