Boarding Houses

Shawnigan's boarding houses are the "home away from home" for all of our students. The bonds that are forged within the walls of the ten campus residences will last a lifetime.

You can have a direct impact on the boys or girls of a boarding house by helping to bring some of the comforts of home to our students.

A donation can be used to send the house on an "outing" that might not otherwise be possible. For example, the boys of Lonsdale's House went on an unforgettable river rafting trip. Renfrew House was able to spend a weekend together on Pender Island as a result of another gift. Gifts have also enabled houses to frame outstanding student artwork and purchase new television and sound equipment for their common rooms to name just a few.

If you are unsure how to direct your gift to a house, funds that can be used for outings and other ways to enrich the students' time here are always welcome. In addition, the following items have been identified as important for our boarding houses in the coming year:

Athletics

Sports are a cornerstone of the Shawnigan educational experience. Through participation in a variety of team and individual sports, our students learn the values of teamwork, dedication, commitment and sportsmanship which will last with them for a lifetime. In an age where adolescent physical fitness is often an afterthought, coaches at Shawnigan challenge our young men and women to improve their bodies as well as their minds.

Gifts to athletics at Shawnigan can be directed to a particular sport or to a general fund that allows the Athletics Director to have funds at his disposal to put to use for the betterment of the department as a whole.  In the past donors have committed funds to help send deserving players on tours, or to purchase new equipment for our gym and cardio fitness centre.

Fine Arts

Shawnigan's fine arts programs are an invaluable addition to the School's educational curriculum. Students are required to participate in at least one fine art for the duration of the school year, and their choices are as varied as the students themselves. Performing arts options include drama and the highly successful musical theatre production (performed for parents, students, staff and friends at the Cowichan Community Centre). There are also a myriad of creative arts options, including studio art, woodwork, pottery and graphic design.

As the fine arts programs evolve there is always the need for new equipment. Gifts can be directed to the Fine Arts Department in general, or to any specific activity.  Instructors from the Fine Art Programs have indicated a list of items they are most in need of below.

Academics

While athletics and fine arts play important roles in the Shawnigan educational experience, the School's foundation will always lie with our resourceful, committed academic faculty. Shawnigan prides itself on being a truly first-class academic institution, and without the efforts of these men and women, the school itself would simply not exist.

As with all other areas of the School, the Academic Department is always searching for new and innovative tools that allow them to continue offering our students the best opportunities to learn and develop. Gifts in the past have ranged from new smartboards and computers for classrooms, to the construction of new buildings to house our Science, Math and Language programs.

Gifts of any size are always welcome and will be used to enhance the academic program at Shawnigan.

Learning Centre

The Learning Centre plays a vital role in the lives of many of Shawnigan's students. Run by a talented group of teachers, tutors and mentors, it is designed as to complement the standard Shawnigan curriculum, providing additional assistance and alternate forms of teaching to allow all of our students to reach their maximum potential.

The Learning Centre is an ever-expanding department, and is always in need of new and upgraded facilities. Staff of the department have identified some items they are most in need of and listed them below:

Gifts of any size are welcome and serve to improve the Learning Centre'a ability to provide student-specific alternative learning plans.
