Planned Giving - Create Your Legacy

The Shawnigan Legacy Society

YOU can help secure Shawnigan’s future by giving “the gift that keeps on giving."

The distinguishing feature of an endowment gift is that the money you entrust to it is never spent. Only the income your gift earns each year is distributed, making your endowment gift a source of income in perpetuity.

This lets you create a lasting legacy for future generations of students. You can give the opportunity of an excellent Shawnigan education now or after you are gone.

"My Shawnigan education is the greatest gift. Thank you!” – Sienna Richardson-Isberg '11

 What is YOUR Passion?

You can direct your endowment gift to the area of school life you are most interested in supporting. That could be financial aid to help bright students come to Shawnigan regardless of financial circumstances, or is your passion the Library, Fine Arts, Chapel or a particular sport? What would you like your legacy to be?

Ways YOU Can Create a Legacy

In addition to their wonderful gift to the School of the Alumni Garden, Dr. John Burr ’49 and his wife Katharine have endowed a fund in their name that provides a half year’s tuition – forever.

“Shawnigan made me what I am today. It is pure joy to repay the help I had when I was at Shawnigan.” – John Burr '49

There are several ways you can contribute a lasting gift to Shawnigan:

  • The easiest way is to simply name Shawnigan in your Will. A bequest to Shawnigan costs you nothing now, but can save taxes on your estate later.
  • You could take out a life insurance policy naming Shawnigan as your beneficiary. The premiums you pay can be tax deductible.
  • You can also create an endowment gift by donating stocks, bonds or property now or after you are gone. Such gifts can save you taxes now or estate taxes later.

The way you support Shawnigan is particular to your own individual circumstances. No matter what way you choose, the result is an enduring gift in your name, or in memory of someone you admire.

Your gift to the endowment is a way of giving back and providing great kids with great opportunities.

Examples of Shawnigan Lake School Endowments

The Hyde-Lay Scholarships Endowment honours the terrific commitment of Derek and Mary Hyde-Lay. It provides Scholarships for great kids of character who otherwise would not be able to come to Shawnigan.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me.” – Monty Tichkowsky '11, recipient of a 2009 Hyde-Lay Scholarship

When former student and Shawnigan Governor, Bruce Olsen ’30 died in 2002, his will bequested an endowment gift to ensure Shawnigan always has funds to hire a Chaplain.

You can also be a part of Shawnigan’s future and help secure the next 100 years of excellence in educating well-rounded students.

Shawnigan’s Legacy Society recognizes alumni, staff and friends of the School who have indicated Shawnigan in their estate plans.

So what will YOUR legacy be?

The School will give you guidance if you are considering a planned gift. However, prospective donors are always encouraged to retain their own independent advice.

The Shawnigan Legacy Society

As a means of acknowledging Planned Gifts, the Shawnigan Legacy Society has been established. Particular recognition is made of the nature of the gift as each new member is inducted—partly in thanks for the gift, and also to increase awareness among the Shawnigan 'family' of the form these gifts can take. Planned Gifts need not be recognized in this fashion, or may be acknowledged anonymously, if that is the donor's wish.
