Brentwood Regatta

A key test for Shawnigan rowers

Shawnigan's top rowers hit their top speed against some of the fastest Canadian and American clubs and schools, at the always-impressive Brentwood Regatta.

Members of the junior boys 8 were encouraged by their result, having improved considerably since the last race. Both the heavyweight and lightweight 4s qualified for the finals, which is no small feat at this regatta. The lightweight 4 finished 4th, with the heavyweights finishing 5th.

Our junior girls 8 were even more encouraged by their result this weekend. For the first time this year, they beat long-time rival Brentwood in the heats, ultimately finishing 5th in the final. This made them the fastest school in their event. Meanwhile, a JV boat that included two grade 8's made the finals and finished an agonizing 0.2 seconds away from a bronze medal. This was an outstanding result from some of our youngest rowers!

The senior boys ran into some very fast competition. Our fastest lightweight 4 raced against heavyweights and just missed out on making the finals, while Kyle F. did well to place 4th in the B final. The senior boys 8 placed 5th in the final of the School 8.

The senior girls 8 also placed 5th in the School event, but they were 2nd out of Canadian schools. They are excited at the opportunity they have been given to find more speed over the course of the next month. Anna K. qualified for the B Final in the single as well.

Overall, our athletes and coaches are working extremely hard, and are encouraged by the results with another month to go in this season. Next up is the Shawnigan Regatta from May 13-15, then CSSRA Nationals for our top crews, in early June.
