Canada Outmuscles USA

Shawnigan hosts international rugby.
International rugby returned to Shawnigan on Tuesday afternoon, as the Canadian Senior Women's Team hosted the USA Eagles in the first match of the Can-Am Series.

Grey skies and a chilly breeze did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the spectators, and the home team rewarded attendees with a sparkling performance, overpowering their neighbours from south of the border in all phases en route to a decisive 51-7 victory. Among the top performers on the day was Shawnigan intern Laura Russell, who was a force to be reckoned with in the front row. While Laura was the only player on the pitch with a direct Shawnigan connection, every member of the team wore the black and gold with pride, as the stag featured prominently on the chest of each player's jersey! Congratulations as well to Gary Dukelow, who has somehow found time in his already busy schedule to serve as Assistant Coach with the women's team.

Momentum appears to be firmly in Rugby Canada's corner as the series moves down the Malahat for the second test, in Langford on Saturday afternoon.
