Vocal treats in Chapel and competition

It's a busy month for Choir at Shawnigan.

Last week, three different choirs competed at the 2015 Cowichan Music Festival, earning solid reviews and invitations for encore performances.

The Fine Art Choir will be returning for Sunday's Festival Highlights Concert to reprise its performances of Amavolovolo and Pharrel Williams' Happy. Before returning however, the choir shared one of those pieces in Chapel on Thursday.

Amavolovolo is a Zulu song from pre-democratic South Africa. Music Director Shannon Tyrrell explained that the song originated as a warning to keep people away from the violent township of KwaMashu. It has since become a well-known demonstration song, and Thursday's Chapel performance featured the song in its original Zulu language, including a drum accompaniment and lively movement from the choir.
