Female Hockey Prospects

Shawnigan's first Girls Hockey camp

Shawnigan is charting new territory with the initial stages of forming a Female Midget 'AAA' Ice Hockey team by August of 2016.

Over the July 24/25th weekend we had 33 Vancouver Island hockey players take part in our first ever female hockey camp. The girls ranged in age from 12 -16, and there was an abundance of young talent.

Jeff Compton put the girls through their paces both on and off the ice. The 5 hours of ice time were dedicated to skills and small games culminating in an exhibition game. Coach Compton introduced the girls to dry-land training in our free weights room, with an emphasis on lifting techniques for three different hockey-specific exercises.

There was no shortage of enthusiasm and the work ethic of these young ladies was impressive. The prospect of adding a Female Midget 'AAA' squad to our strong boys program is very exciting indeed. Throughout the year we will continue to give opportunities to girls from around BC and further afield while we prepare for the 2016-17 season.

The camp was a great success and a big thank you goes out to Coach Compton and his assistants, Andrea and Alex.
