Grade 9 Rugby

ISA finals at Brentwood

On a pitch that was wetter than a penguin's pocket and with driving rain at their backs, the grade 9 Golden Stags produced a mixed display and were, unfortunately, on the wrong side of a 17-14 score in favour of St. George’s. It was the third time these teams had faced each other, with Shawnigan winning the first match, and then drawing the second game this weekend past 21-21.

Despite the conditions, the team tried to play inventively and with width; however, it was the defensive display that lacked the bite it had three days previously. Predictably, this allowed the St. George’s attack to gather momentum, and it was only some desperate and impressive scramble defence that prevented the dragon slayers from notching a few more scores in the first half.

The boys in gold scored two excellent tries in the first half and credit to them for fighting back from a ten-point deficit. Our attack could not find enough rhythm or threatening lines of run to upset the George’s defence, and after a well-contested second half, they crossed our line after some consistent pressure.

Overall, the Shawnigan team has developed considerably in their skill set, their attitude towards training, and their understanding of the game’s values. It is a group of young men who could achieve plenty of success in the coming years should they want to. Mr. Monro and Mr. Linn would like to thank our fellow coaches, Mr. Welsh and Mr. Balkovec, as well as the training staff, led by Jenn McKinnon, and finally all the Grade 9 boys for their collective efforts in the program this year.
