Shawnigan Regatta

An annual weekend of rowing

Rowing took centre stage this weekend, as Shawnigan hosted the 55th annual Shawnigan Lake Regatta.

The grassy meadows of West Shawnigan Lake Park were once again packed with athletes and oars, as well as food tents, volunteers and fans.

Weather conditions were great for racers and fans, and though high winds and waves forced some of Saturday afternoon's races to be delayed until Sunday, all participating crews had their shots to earn personal bests and medals from the School's Centennial Regatta.

Four Shawnigan crews were able to win their events, with the grade 8 contingent leading the way.

Mikayla B. and Georgia H. took part in two winning races, following their junior 'C' girls double victory with a first place finish in the junior 'C' girls quad. Shawnigan's junior 'C' boys quad also emerged victorious in a terrific race with a Victoria City crew, while the junior 'B' boys lightweight four earned a trophy with a six-second victory over Vancouver College.

Other highlights included a strong performance from the senior women's eight, as well as a good showing from the junior women's quad. Racing in a single sculling event, Kyle F. earned a spot in the final against many strong and experienced athletes.

Organizers are grateful to the legion of volunteers that once again made the Regatta possible, and for the high spirits of everyone involved.
