The Amazing Math Race

When math's involved, everyone's a winner!

They needed mathematics, teamwork and speed.

Students in Mr. Lam's Foundations and Pre-calculus 10 class zoomed around campus on Friday afternoon, testing their resolve in the 'Amazing Math Race.'

The class was divided into pairs that formed nine teams, each assigned a team colour. The contest was created as a final review activity to conclude the recent unit on Systems of Linear Equations, with the School's sprawling campus providing the perfect venue. The race required students to work together to solve a linear system at each “pit stop,” with the solution providing the coordinates to various locations around Shawnigan. They were not easy clues either, as students needed a few minutes huddled over scientific calculators to solve each piece of the puzzle.

"I sweat more doing this than I did in sport today," grinned one student after arriving at the finish line a mere 15 seconds behind the winning team.

The official winners? “Team Green” – comprised of Bobbi W and Teddy Z.

Mr. Lam wishes to congratulate his entire class on a well-run race, and would like to thank the handful of Grade 11 volunteers who helped marshal the race at each pit stop.
