Georg Stroebel

Georg teaches Entrepreneurship 12 and Commerce 10, runs the Stag Café, does duty in Groves’ House and coaches rugby and squash. Originally from South Africa, Georg completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree and worked in the business world as an auditor, accountant, and bank manager before being recruited by the South African Department of Trade and Industry.

Georg spent six years with this government organization in diplomatic service in Tokyo promoting exports and trade relations between Japan and South Africa. In 1993, he and Gaynor his wife of over 35 years—who is Groves’ House Director and Head Librarian here at Shawnigan—immigrated to Canada.

Georg and Gaynor have two sons and a daughter and are proud grandparents of Ryan and Megan, which explains why they are constantly on the lookout for Thomas the Tank Engine toys! Upon arrival in Canada, Georg enjoyed a number of professional opportunities before finally settling down at Shawnigan. He owned and operated the Rock Cod Café and Cowichan Bay Fish Market in nearby Cowichan Bay and was a business consultant to First Nations entrepreneurs assisting in business start-ups just to name a few.

A life-long learner, this past weekend Georg was conferred with a Master of Arts in Education with special focus on Curriculum and Instruction. Georg has also completed post-graduate studies in Auditing and Accounting.
