Jason Lam

After earning his Bachelor’s of Science and Bachelor’s of Education degree from Simon Fraser University, Jason spent six months as a teacher on call in the Burnaby School District before commencing his career at Shawnigan Lake School. Jason’s roles at the School include: teaching math, coaching the boys’ junior ‘A’ basketball team, and being the Assistant House Director at Lake’s House. His tireless efforts on behalf of his students in the classroom and on the basketball court demonstrates his passion to create every opportunity for their individual success.

As an alumnus of Vancouver College, an independent day school, Jason is a “true advocate” of the independent school system. “Coming here, I was looking for something more,” says Jason. “I feel the boarding experience offered at Shawnigan Lake School creates a dynamic sense of community—completely different from the day school model.”

While most teachers take advantage of their summer vacations with much-needed relaxation time, Jason spends his summer vacations every year in another classroom. He teaches math at Willingdon Secondary, an institution that serves as the school for one of British Columbia’s Youth Detention Centres.

Despite his busyness, Jason does manage to find time to spend away from the classroom to develop his other interests. One of Jason’s favourite pastimes is riding his motorcycle. Shawnigan’s rural setting provides a great backdrop for this hobby, even if free time at Shawnigan is at a premium! His goal is to eventually ride across the country.

Another favourite pastime of Jason’s is travelling. “Every year, I try to take a trip outside of Canada,” says Jason. His latest trip happened last spring, when he and his girlfriend travelled to El Salvador. Who knows what his next exotic destination will be! In the meantime, we are happy to have him here at Shawnigan.
