Nigel Mayes
Nigel Mayes, who graduated from Shawnigan in 1989, was named Co-Head of the Science Department working alongside expert teacher and department head Stephen Lane (a 1967 Shawnigan Grad!). In addition to teaching AP Chemistry, Nigel is part of the duty team in Lake’s House, and is most likely to be found taking photographs for the yearbook or giving tutorials.
While a student at Shawnigan, Nigel lived in Ripley’s House and was Deputy Head of School and School Prefect in his grade 12 year. Outside of the classroom he rowed and played rugby and grew to love photography.
Ski Week is Nigel’s favourite activity of the year because of the community building and the unique opportunity it affords in showcasing all of the hidden talents of our students and staff. Nigel returned to Shawnigan in 2001 after teaching in the public school system in Pemberton and in Castlegar (West Kooteneys) and at Dresden International School in Germany. He is married to Gillian—another educator—and they have Liam who will soon turn two years old.
