Scott Noble
....or, as we call him, Enviroman!
Scott Noble (Shawnigan graduate of 1975) began teaching at the School in 1983. Shawnigan Lake School's "Enviroman" is a science teacher and as well as educating the School in the three R's (re-duce, re-use, and re-cycle) he contributes to the School and to the community of Shawnigan Lake and the Province through his environmental action.
Taking part in a program called "International Coastal Clean-Up" his Environment Club have worked to clean up Mason's Beach and the first 500 metres of Shawnigan Creek. The Environment Club has also reforested a large logged area of land north of the School and continues to improve the natural surroundings. As well, the club conducts a fish stock assessment for the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection. Over a ten-day period in both the Fall and Spring, the students daily remove fish from a trap set in Shawnigan Lake. After anesthetizing the fish, a host of research data is collected whereupon the fully recovered fish (except for those pesky 'exotics', the yellow perch) are returned to the lake.
Mr. Noble also coordinates the Salmonid Enhancement Program with the grade nine classes at the School and runs the Mark Hobson Salmon Hatchery where students take a real part in re-vitalizing the salmon stocks in a number of local watersheds. The grade eight class, under his tutelage, takes part in the GLOBE Program (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment). These young scientists collect atmospheric data and share this over the Internet with the scientific community and other Schools around the world.
Mr. Noble's concern for the habitat of local flora and fauna preserves the notion that caring teachers really do make a big difference in a sometimes thought-less world. Thank you Mr. Noble for making our community a better environment for all!
