Shawnigan Faces Making Headlines in the Rugby World!

Fresh off leading his squad to a second consecutive AAA Provincial Championship, Shawnigan 1st XV Head Coach Tim Murdy has been selected as an Assistant Coach of the Canadian Senior Men's Select XV in the upcoming Americas Rugby Championship (ARC).

2009 Grad Alex Thorlakson into finals at World Rowing Junior Championships!

The 2009 World Rowing Junior Championships are underway in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France, and 2009 graduate Alex Thorlakson has advanced to the final of the coxed four competition after his crew won their opening heat in a time of 6:24.77. Their winning time saw them finish ahead of squads from the United States and New Zealand, who are now faced with qualifying for the finals through a repechage.

Shawnigan Rowers to Represent BC at Canada Summer Games

For two weeks in August, many of Canada's top school-age athletes will descend on its smallest province, Prince Edward Island, for the 2009 Canada Summer Games.  The crew competing for British Columbia in the rowing events will feature four Shawnigan alumni, and one current student, competing for their share of the gold and the chance to be recognized as National Champions.

Largest Turnout Ever for Golf Classic

On Thursday, June 4th, staff, alumni, and friends of Shawnigan descended upon UBC’s University Golf Club to take part in the 17th Annual DHL Shawnigan Golf Classic. A record 126 golfers hit the links for a 1:00 PM shotgun start that featured sunny skies and record-high temperatures, and more than one foursome in strong contention for the coveted gold jackets bestowed upon the winners.  The sunshine came as a welcome change after last year's event was marred by heavy rain - here's hoping future golf tournaments follow suit!

Shawnigan Grad to Start for Canadian National Rugby Team!

The 2009 Churchill Cup is taking place over the next two weeks in Denver, CO, and a Shawnigan graduate is featuring prominently for the Canadian National Team. Cowichan Valley product Matt Evans ’06 has been selected for his first International start for the Senior squad, chosen to start at fullback as Canada looks to topple a strong Ireland ‘A’ team on Wednesday at Infinity Park.

Shawnigan Alums Win Gold at IRA Regatta National Championships

The University of Washington, featuring three Shawnigan alumni, swept away the competition at last weekend’s 107th IRA Championship Regatta, taking home gold medals in all three eights for the first time since 1997.  

Shawnigan Lake Iron Women Invade Edmonton!

This weekend the SLS Senior Girls Rugby Team will be in Edmonton for the 2009 Thunderbird Invitational Rugby Tournament. The two-day tournament will see the girls play a total of four one-hour games:

12:00 - vs. Harry Ainlay Titans (Edmonton, AB)
16:00 - vs. ME LaZerte Voyageurs (Edmonton, AB)

SATURDAY, MAY 2ND
11:00 - vs. John G. Diefenbaker Chiefs (Calgary, AB)
13:00 - vs. Ross Shepard Thunderbirds (Edmonton, AB)

Shawnigan Invades San Diego!

This past weekend saw a small but vocal contingent of SLS alumni descend upon PETCO Park in San Diego for the annual USA Sevens Rugby Tournament. The tournament stretched over two days and featured a number of exciting matches. Day One saw the United States upset Australia and come within a hair’s breadth of shocking South Africa, as well as the upstart Kenyans delighting their colourful supporters by downing mighty New Zealand.

Head of the Lake and Hungerford Cup 2009

This weekend started the racing season off for the rowers after a long wait for the ice to melt. The Hungerford cup was held on Saturday with a 1k race course. It was a great success with record numbers of athletes participating. Most notable races were the Men’s 4+ and both the Hungerford Cup (M2-) and Roaf trophy (W2-), all won by Shawnigan rowers.
