Topic: Shawnigan Talents

Although everyone at Shawnigan is known to be very multi-talented, you would never guess some of the amazing things people can do. There are so many talents that are not shown by the students because they are so busy keeping up with the Shawnigan lifestyle. Max R. is a grade 11 student at Shawnigan is an amazing snowboarder and is sponsored by Burton Snowboard Company because of it. Another amazing and rarely shown talent is Drew M.'s ability to BMX bike and do unbelievable tricks. Even though Shawnigan has such a busy lifestyle, people can still keep up amazing skills that are unseen.

Topic: Groves' Open House

Groves' hosted an open house in which the whole school could take part. The grade tens of the House were the main leaders of this difficult task of hosting the school, but as usual did a fantastic job as hostesses and pulled off a great open house. An open house allows students from other houses to walk through the whole house, visiting friends in their rooms. This includes boys getting a look at our rooms! The girls were very excited and had many munchies laid out, and there was music blasted throughout the entire dorm.

Topic: Grade 9 Round Table

Being on the Grade 9 Round Table is a tough job, but it does not go without its rewards. We have planned a couple of events and fund-raisers so far and we are always tackling a new project. An example of this was when we had the opportunity to do a gift drive for the less fortunate families in the community. Currently, we are working on helping to raise money for a local four-year-old boy named Josh B. He is a boy with a heart condition and his parents are running out of money, so we will be holding charity events to help this family.

Topic: Goldstream Provincial Park

Our trip to Goldstream Provincial Park was very rewarding. We travelled in groups and once we arrived, we headed to the field house where we saw eagles and ducks flying around everywhere outside. It was quite beautiful. Jesse, the tour guide, told us a nice story about the First Nations and what they used for fishing. The trip was very worthwhile and gave us a real appreciation for the life of the First Nations people and their connection to the salmon in the Goldstream River.

Topic: International Week

Let me first start out by saying that International Week was awesome. From eating Japanese BBQ, homemade French bread and bubble tea to the exquisite desserts that the Korean group gave us for our House Treat, International Week was a complete success. But I have to say that my favorite part of International Week was, by far, the Stage Show. Be it the plainly awe-striking performance by the Chinese group, the wonderful cultural dance of the Japanese group, J.

Topic: Duxbury Chapel Presentation

This past Saturday, the boys of Duxbury performed during the Chapel Service as the House celebrates its tenth anniversary this October. The theme of this presentation was “Unity”. The service consisted of hymns, speeches, musical offerings and even a reading from “Lord of the Rings”. The boys had loads of fun with the performance, and were able to truly show the importance and advantages of being a team. As the year goes on, Duxbury continues to bond tighter as a House.

This past Sunday, the girls of Groves' house got together to honour the annual pumpkin carving contest. The girls got into their little/big sister groups and creatively chose the perfect design for their pumpkin. After a squishy pumpkin-gut fight, we all got down to business and produced some wonderful jack-o-lanterns. The six pumpkins have yet to be judged, but the winning group will win a well-deserved dessert at Steeples. On another pumpkin note, Groves' came 2nd in the inter-house pumpkin carving contest!

The History 12 Stock Market Game was a wonderful mixture of education and fun for our class. It was a simulation of the 1929 stock market crash in the US. Our teacher, Mr. Olson Jr. gave each person a loan from the Bank of Olson of $50, 000 and invested each of us equally into 5 commodities that we traded throughout the block. He then explained the rules to us; he read out real news headlines from that time involving iron, wheat, oil, fish and coal before each round, we were to take that information and use it wisely in our trading. At the end of the trading Mr.

I first came to Shawnigan Lake School at beginning of September. My first impression was that the campus was huge and it was surrounded by nature. The people here were very kind and obliging; the seniors in the House welcomed me and introduced themselves. The teachers are very friendly and look after us. The grade eight-rugby team is exciting to play and our coaches are wonderful.
