FAQ

List of 7 frequently asked questions.

  • How can I schedule a tour?

Contact the Admissions Office at 250-743-6207 or email admissions@shawnigan.ca.

We welcome families on weekdays, ideally between October and May, and we suggest you tour while classes are in session, so you have the opportunity to view a typical academic day in action (the last tour of the day is at 2 p.m.). Most visits are between 2-2.5 hours.

We are able to offer tours during most holidays by appointment but we do prefer that you come when our students are on campus so you can enjoy the sense of community and see our students going about their daily activities.
  • When is the application deadline?

The office works on a rolling admissions basis. This means that we accept applications all year, as we work through the admissions process (application, campus tour, interview and testing). Spaces for our senior grades (11 and 12) tend to fill up quickly. Spaces for our junior grades (8, 9 and 10) are usually filled by late May.
  • What is a typical school visit like?

During your visit, you will tour the campus with a student tour guide and hear about Shawnigan from a student's point of view. You will also meet with our Director of Admissions, Gaynor Samuel.

A typical visit is about two-and-a-half hours.
  • How much does Shawnigan cost?

    $35,500Day Student
    $64,500B.C./Canadian Boarder
    $82,000US Boarder
    $90,000International Boarder

    $6,800Hockey Fee
    $3,360New Student Registration Fee
    $260Application Fee
  • What does Shawnigan look for in an applicant?

We are looking for applicants who maintain a solid academic standing, are involved in extra-curricular activities (sports, arts, drama, music, volunteering) and are keen to get involved in our community and try new things. It is beneficial for applicants to have had an opportunity to live away from home on a student exchange or sleep-away summer camp.
  • Where should we stay if planning an overnight visit?

If you will arrive in Victoria the day prior to your visit, or you plan to stay in the area afterward, we can suggest places to stay and eat. Please contact our Admissions Office and we can send you some suggestions by email. Once you are on the island, navigate to 1975 Renfrew Road, Shawnigan Lake, B.C. V0R 2W1.
  • What should we bring and/or wear for the visit?

While we prefer that you submit your application materials prior to your visit, we understand that some of you wish to visit the school first, before formally submitting an application. It would be helpful to know your child's name, current grade and interests as this helps us select a student tour guide that we feel is a good fit for your family. We are able to provide you with a more meaningful tour if we have some preliminary information.

The campus tour takes approximately one hour, so we suggest you wear comfortable shoes.

In the event of damp weather, we provide umbrellas. If anyone in your party has mobility issues, please let us know in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.
