COVID-19 Emergency Procedures and Information

Shawnigan Lake School has closely monitored the evolving COVID-19 situation and we have created this web page to update our community on the latest developments, school decisions, emergency procedures and information.

“We want to keep our community healthy and safe under these challenging conditions, while doing our part to help prevent the spread of the virus.
The wellbeing of our community is our top priority.” ~ Head of School Richard Lamont

The School continues to receive regular advice on appropriate measures to protect students and our whole community as we approach this complex and changing situation. We are in touch with local health agencies, the BC Ministry of Education, our Board of Governors, and other schools on Vancouver Island with significant boarding populations on campus.

COVID-19 FAQs for the Academic Year 2021-22

All information shared in the following “Frequently Asked Questions” is subject to change. We have based our decisions on the most recent national, provincial, and local health guidance, and will continue to do so as the situation unfolds. With the advent of the Omicron and other variants and the fourth wave of COVID-19 in Canada, we must all recognise that we are in a fluid situation and that regulations may change very quickly. The School will provide families with regular updates as changes occur.

Vaccines

List of 4 frequently asked questions.

  • Does my child need to be vaccinated in order to travel?

No. Current guidelines in Canada allow for essential travel (such as attending school) without vaccination. All partially or non-vaccinated U.S. and international travellers must have a quarantine plan upon arrival should it be required. For more details, please see: “What is the Quarantine Plan for U.S. and international students?”
  • Does my child need to be vaccinated in order to attend Shawnigan?

No. We realize that every family situation is different and that you might still be considering whether or not to receive the vaccine. Rest assured, your child will be welcomed at Shawnigan regardless of their vaccination status. We do, however, strongly encourage you to consider the option of vaccination.

Students who are partially or non-vaccinated may be impacted in specific areas of campus life by health and safety protocols put in place to protect them as well as others in the School community. These measures currently include restrictions around travelling within and out of Canada by train/bus/plane for sporting or other events.
  • What do I need to do before I enter Canada?

Aside from the standard requirements for entering Canada such as obtaining study permits, visas, and a valid passport, there are some COVID-19 specific requirements. All travellers, even if they are fully vaccinated, must use ArriveCAN (app or web portal) to submit their travel information. All unvaccinated travellers must take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departing their home country and may be requested to take a COVID-19 test upon arrival; fully vaccinated travellers will not be tested unless they have been randomly selected. To that end, fully vaccinated travellers must arrive with a quarantine plan and be prepared to quarantine for 14 days in case they are found to be symptomatic or do not meet the requirements at the border.
  • Can my child receive their first and/or second dose of the vaccine while at school?

Yes. If your child would like to receive their first, second and/or booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer Biontech or Moderna) after they arrive at Shawnigan, this can be booked through the Student Health Centre. There is no charge for this vaccine program.

Arrival On Campus

List of 4 frequently asked questions.

  • What is the quarantine plan for U.S. and international students?

All travellers regardless of vaccination status are no longer required to quarantine, although they must provide a 14-day quarantine plan through ArriveCAN and be prepared to quarantine should they be symptomatic or not meet the requirements at the border. All students returning to campus from outside of Canada are responsible for having their own quarantine plan, details can be found here.
  • Can I travel internationally with my child?

Yes, current regulations allow for one parent to accompany their child. Please be aware that the final decision will be made by Canadian Border Agents. We are happy to provide a Parent Support Letter for the parent who will be traveling. Should you choose to travel with your child, you must make your own arrangements for a 14-day quarantine and submit your quarantine plan to Shawnigan Lake School as well as through ArriveCAN.
  • Will students living in Canada but outside of BC need to quarantine?

Currently, out-of-province students do not have to quarantine for 14 days when entering British Columbia. We will continue to monitor the latest guidance given by government health authorities and will contact families should regulations change.

We encourage all students returning to Shawnigan from within Canada to practice a degree of self-isolation two weeks prior to travel. This means limiting activities and gatherings outside of their current “social bubble,” monitoring their health daily, practicing good hand washing and physical distancing, and wearing a mask on all flights. If a student or any of their immediate family members become sick prior to their scheduled return to Shawnigan, they must delay their travel plans until a negative COVID-19 test has been reported.
  • Can I bring my child to campus?

Yes, families are welcome to bring their children to campus. We ask that a maximum of two family members accompany their child or set of siblings. Families who have travelled internationally and are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated must complete the mandatory 14-day quarantine before arrival on campus in accordance with provincial health regulations. Anyone who is fully vaccinated and who has been out of the country within the last two weeks is requested to wear a mask for 14 days after arrival in Canada.

Campus Life

List of 3 frequently asked questions.

  • Will masks be mandatory?

No, masks are no longer required in British Columbia. The decision to wear a mask or face covering is a personal choice for everyone. This choice is supported and treated with respect at Shawnigan.
  • What extra measures will be taken to ensure the health and safety of the School community?

Throughout the year, all students will be required to complete a daily health check every morning before they leave their boarding house (boarding students) or off-campus home (day students). Other preventative measures such as frequent hand washing or sanitizing (hand sanitizer will continue to be supplied around campus), physical distancing and enhanced cleaning of all equipment and spaces will continue. Shawnigan Lake School has a communicable diseases plan in place for all school events and is constantly monitoring the guidance of the local, provincial, and federal governments around COVID-19 protocols for schools.
  • Will outside visitors be allowed on campus?

Yes, outside visitors will be allowed on campus, but they will be required to follow certain COVID-19 protocols, including completing a daily health check before entering campus and following all of the School’s health and safety protocols. Mask wearing is supported for visitors who wish to do so, and requested for visitors who have been out of the country within the last two weeks, are not fully vaccinated, or will be attending a Chapel Gathering with Shawnigan students and staff. These conditions will be subject to change as we adhere to public health guidance.
