VEX Robotics Tournament

South Island Challenge
With 48 teams from all over the island and lower mainland, the fourth annual Shawnigan South Island VEX Robotics tournament was a grand success. Shawnigan had ten teams participating, of which seven were rookies taking part in their first ever robotics tournament.

The field of BC roboteers is deep and our teams were up against last year’s world champions and competing with many other highly successful programs. Our teams held their own, and Josh W., Henry Y. and Hannah B. earned our top result of 12th spot after the qualifying round. Our strength in the qualifying round enabled two our Shawnigan robots to act as captain for the alliance playoff rounds. One of our rookie teams, Justin L. and Jacky L., ended up as the 16th captain and gained an entry into the playoff round.

The team is hugely encouraged and several students got right back to the lab on Sunday and started to redesign and rebuild their robots for the next tournament at West Vancouver Secondary on Dec. 8.

Thanks to all the student and staff and parent volunteers who helped make this another memorable weekend for all our guests at Shawnigan. Go, Robots!
