Shawnigan enjoys the Sevens

School community supporting in Langford

The Shawnigan community is seeing red and white, after a hugely successful weekend at the Canada Sevens.

With the eyes of the rugby world on Langford, Shawnigan was ecstatic to share two days of international women's rugby with students, staff, and the wider community.

Thanks to the school's partnership with Rugby Canada as well as anonymous donors, Shawnigan was able to share approximately 160 general admission tickets throughout the weekend.

In addition, the school welcomed around 100 people to a box at Westhills Stadium, with members of Team Canada even making a surprise visit after their final game.

"It was an absolutely stellar weekend where board members, alumni, staff, and students were treated to some outstanding, engaging rugby while thoroughly enjoying each other's company," says Shawnigan Girls XV Coach Shannon Atkins. "Langford was the perfect venue to expose our young rugby players, male and female alike, to a great standard of rugby – allowing them to see the kind of player many of them aspire to be."

Team Canada finished fifth in Langford but remains in third place in the overall Sevens Series standings. The top four teams after the final event in June in France automatically earn berths to the 2020 Olympics in Toyko.

Roughly 50 students volunteered over the course of the weekend, while two current Shawnigan athletes – Chloe S. and Gracie M. – also enjoyed the opportunity to play in front of the near-capacity crowd in the BC Elite Sevens competition during an intermission on Sunday.
