Shawnigan students shoot (for) the stars
Shawnigan students are earning regional and national acclaim for their work.
While they continue to work towards exams and final projects, three students have completed extra-curricular projects that have earned them public recognition and even prize money.
Grade 10 student Ainsley F. recently earned an honourable mention in the US Department of State's National High School Essay Contest.
The California native was one of 18 honourable mentions across the US, earning her a cash prize.
Her paper, comparing the government intervention in the Rwandan genocide to the response to genocide in Darfur, was an outside project for a competition she discovered while exploring US government internships.
Meanwhile, an image by Candice L. has been accepted into the Sooke Fine Art Show. Taken in the Shawnigan Observatory, Candice's photo is one of 350 pics (out of 4000 entries) selected for the juried show.
Currently in Grade 11, Candice's photo took about 50 hours to expose, plus another seven hours to edit. It's of the North America Nebula – so named because it resembles the continent's shape.
Earlier this term, Fara F. placed third in the annual Hector MacIntosh speech competition.
Presented annually since 1982 by the Rotary Club of Duncan, the competition is named after a former Shawnigan teacher who funded the prizes in perpetuity when he passed away.
Her third-place entry – "All the boys I've ever loved" – earned the Grade 11 student a cash prize.
