Health & Wellness

student getting health check
Shawnigan's Health Centre is staffed by registered nurses, school counsellors, and athletic therapists. Our team works together with two local family doctors to support students with their day-to-day medical needs. At least one school nurse is on duty or on call at all times, and doctor clinics are held on campus two or three times per week. The Health Centre staff also manage off-campus medical appointments for boarding students, including dental, orthodontics, physiotherapy, and culturally sensitive counseling.

Shawnigan supports holistic student health and well-being with an expansive co-curricular student life program. We contract a number of renowned external experts in areas such as healthy relationships, cyber safety, and drug and alcohol awareness who are able to connect with our students and provide a progressive education on these topics on a regular basis.

Health and wellness at Shawnigan is also supported by a wide range of other initiatives including our revolutionary student-centered timetable, our annual Health and Wellness Day, a Health and Wellness Committee, and Soul Seeking projects for students to pursue independent inquiry-based learning projects. We also have a student- and staff-led committee, BE A JEDI, dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion and belonging at the School.

In addition to our health and wellness programming and support systems, Shawnigan considers the safety of its students to be of primary importance. We strongly believe that students in our care are entitled to be protected from harm and to experience a positive educational journey that is characterized by physical safety, social connectedness and inclusivity. As a boarding school, we recognize we hold a heightened responsibility for ensuring an abuse-free environment and we take this responsibility seriously. We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
