Azabu Exchange

Farewell to friends from Japan
Shawnigan students and staff bid a fond farewell to friends from Toyko’s Azabu High School on Sunday. This year marks the 17th year of the exchange partnership between Shawnigan and Azabu.

The foundation of this partnership is the annual exchange both parties undertake. The Shawnigan group enjoyed their most recent visit to Azabu in November 2017, while their Japanese counterparts (accompanied by Azabu teachers Yasuhide Nakano and Yoshisada Saitoh) arrived in Shawnigan Lake on April 3.

During their visit, the students from Azabu put on a “Japan Night” presentation for their Shawnigan audience and experienced academic classes, sports and fine arts across the campus. They also had the opportunity to enjoy some uniquely Canadian experiences, including a skating session at the Charlie Purdey Arena and a First Nations canoe outing.

The visit concluded with a dinner outing to Bridgeman's Bistro in Mill Bay, followed by a celebratory bonfire at the Pavilion.
As ever, the whole Shawnigan community would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone involved in making the visit a special and memorable experience, and to our friends from Azabu for making the journey to Vancouver Island to see us.
