Hatchery visit

Environmental stewardship from high school to preschool
Shawnigan students have shared their insights with the community, in another visit by local preschoolers.

On Monday, Shawnigan welcomed a class of youngsters from the Shawnigan Christian Preschool for a tour of the Mark Hobson Hatchery.

In recent weeks, science students and E-club members have released around 10,000 salmon fry into local waterways.  Monday's visit allowed the children to observe this ritual, as the last 370 Coho fry were released into Hartl Creek.

As well, the children joined their high school mentors in a 'pond dipping' in Lake Omar, as they observed and recorded the insect populations of the on-campus lake.

Students working in the Mark Hobson Hatchery are continually involved in life cycle of local salmon, with thousands of fry released every spring and many of these exact fish returning to the area in the fall as they prepare to reproduce.
