Camping on Newcastle Island
The Outdoor Education crew were fortunate enough to enjoy some spectacular summer-like weather for a weekend camping trip from May 12-13.

However, while the original plan had been for a kayak adventure to Pirate’s Cove Marine Provincial Park on De Courcy Island, the wind proved too strong for a crossing and so the group drove onto Nanaimo for a new expedition destination of Newcastle Island.

“The wind pretty well blew us most of the way to our destination!” says English teacher and Outdoor Pursuits instructor Jenny Ferris.

On Newcastle Island, the group hiked, set up camp, discussed the history of sandstone mining on the island and listened to a few legendary ghost stories set around the island’s Kanaka Bay.

The next day, the group enjoyed a sunlit paddle back to Brechin Boat Ramp in Nanaimo and from there headed back home to Shawnigan.

The next planned trip to Pirate's Cove will take place on May 26-27.
