Shawnigan Regatta

Sunny skies and strong results

Beautiful weather and outstanding performances helped make the 57th annual Shawnigan Regatta a great success.

More than 600 rowers converged on West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park, May 11-13, for the 2018 event. As one of the last regattas of the competitive season, high school and club crews from across the region were in peak form, racing for seasonal best times and final improvements before the national championships in Ontario in June.

In all, Shawnigan crews earned five first-place finishes, all of them from girls teams. Shawnigan crews won the U17 Women's 4+, the U17 Novice Women's 2x, the U17 Junior Varsity Women's 4+, the U17 Women's 8+, and the U19 Women's 8+, as well as earning four second-place finishes and a pair of third-place showings.

Ellexi F. led the Shawnigan charge, contributing to three winning boats, while Olivia B. sat in the cox seat for three wins. Seven different junior girls won two gold medals apiece, while Sam A. earned a second place (U17 Men's 4x) and a third-place (U17 Men's single) finish on the boys' side.

Overall, Shawnigan earned 497 points – the highest point total of all high schools present.

The strong results, combined with a major donation from Rogers Communications announced on Friday night, point to an exciting future for Shawnigan Rowing.

Shawnigan Head of Rowing Colin Mattock, meanwhile, is emphasizing his gratitude to the hundreds of volunteers who made the regatta possible.
