On the way to Provincials
Shawnigan Girls 1st XV played the Island 15's final game against Cowichan High School on May 16, finishing with a 50-15 victory. Contributing to this success were Avery C., Chloe S. and Jayde M. who scored one try each, Sammi L. who scored two tries and Maggie B. who scored three.

“It was a battle,” recounts Coach Shannon Atkins. “The Cowichan High players kept crashing up the middle hard. We had to work extremely hard on defense to try to stop them. Our offense was playing well and when we got our hands on the ball, we quickly found success. However, Cowichan was so strong that they had possession a great deal of the time. Our girls are skilled, fast and strong, and we will need every ounce of that to pursue ultimate success at Provincials in Williams Lake this week.”

Coach Atkins added that the girls joined in a moment of silence before the game to honor the memory of PEI’s Brodie McCarthy who passed away after an accident on the rugby field. The teams linked arms as sign of solidarity, conveying the message “From one island to another, we send our love.”

The Shawnigan Girls XV play their first game at Provincials on Thursday.
