Prefect Chapel

Shawnigan's student leaders reflect
Shawnigan's prefects took over the School Chapel on Saturday, as they shared what they have learned in their SLS careers.

With Head of School Dean M. away from the School because of a concussion, James M. read a speech on Dean's behalf, touching on his academic and athletic growth. "Life in the house is an aspect of Shawnigan I'm truly grateful for," James quoted. "It taught me to value the little moments in life, because those are the ones you will always remember."

While many moments of the service paid tribute to Headmaster Robertson's leadership, Maia C.'s musical offering was particularly moving. Recalling his counsel from her Grade 10 year, Maia performed a touching version of Unchained Melody, to the delight of Mr. Robertson and the entire congregation.

On behalf of the entire prefect group, Lea C. then offered a list of tips on how to thrive at Shawnigan, including "Challenge yourself," "Don't be afraid to talk to the duty staff in your houses," and "Learn how to ask for help."

In his turn at the lectern, Ben H. offered a brief tribute to Director of School Life Matt Clinton-Baker, who is in charge of the prefect group. "Above all else, Mr. C-B is a man of integrity," Ben said. "He has the judgment and the courage to make decisions at the hardest of times."

The prefects drew smiles with their adapted lyrics to Morning Has Broken, as they put a special Shawnigan spin on the offertory hymn.
