Shawnigan Summer

Day 1: Monday, July 16

English Plus is underway!
Shawnigan’s inaugural English Plus Program is underway, with the first day of classes taking place on Monday, July 16! Our participants have arrived on campus during a glorious spell of summer weather and have settled in happily to their accommodation.

The first day started with an opportunity for everyone to meet and learn more about one another. In tables of seven, everyone got the chance to speak about himself or herself and hear about their peers, with topics of conversation ranging from home, family and school, to our favourite subjects, our fears, and our successes.

Following this introductory bonding session, the students enjoyed a tour of the campus, with everyone immediately learning a classic Shawnigan tradition: to rub the nose of the bust of Chairman of the Board of Governors Sir Percy Lake, situated in the lobby of the main building, for good luck whenever you pass!

From there it was straight to class, including an introduction to public speaking, leadership, science and, of course, English! After class, our students enjoyed an introduction to the game of rugby with Seattle Seawolves player Ray Barkwill before enjoying a fine arts session, exploring aspects of film production, instrumental arts, recording arts and orienteering.

We look forward to another great day tomorrow!
