Maggie B. receives top award at B.C. Games

Shawnigan rugby star honoured
Shawnigan student Maggie B. was named the athlete of the B.C. Summer Games at the closing ceremony on Sunday, July 22 for her integral part in leading the Island team to gold in women's rugby 7s, beating Fraser Valley in Sunday morning's tournament final.

Her athleticism and leadership were recognized with the W. R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence. This award, named in honor of former B.C. premier William Bennett, is designed to recognize and support the ongoing development of young athletes and includes a $2,500 bursary.

Maggie, who will start her Grade 12 year at Shawnigan in September, was one of 2,300 athletes who competed in 18 sports at venues throughout the Cowichan Valley during this year's B.C. Summer Games.
