Shawnigan Junior Open

A captivating start to the season

The squash season opened with vigour, as Shawnigan Lake School played host to the 2018 Shawnigan Junior Open.

Featuring some of the best players from BC and beyond, this year's tournament saw around 90 players converge on the Shawnigan Sportsplex for three days of non-stop action.

In girls' play, two-time Canadian champion Lucia B. defended her crown in the Girls Open bracket without dropping a game, beating teammate Anika K. in Sunday's final.

Lucia's brother Matt (Evergreen Squash Club, Vancouver) also battled his way to the Boys Open final (losing in four games to Shawnigan's Mitchell K.) while siblings Ava and Roman also entered, making it four members of the same family on hand for the tournament.

In other action, Shawnigan's Aaron W. won the Boys Silver event, defending a title his older brother Colin won last year. Thomas D. also produced a strong weekend, claiming the Boys' Bronze title.

Shawnigan Squash Coach Mike Johnson says he was thrilled with the high level of squash played throughout the tournament, also thanking sponsors Todd Blumel, One Cent Realty, the Taiji Brand Group, and Ms. Delphine Wu.
