Fall teams compete on fields, rinks, and courts

A month into the school year, first-term teams are now into the thick of their seasons.

In his weekly sports roundup to students on Monday, Athletic Director Tim Murdy singled out the senior girls volleyball team, which earned an impressive second-place finish at a highly competitive tournament at Nanaimo's Vancouver Island University over the weekend.

A key community event in the Cowichan Valley, the John Ferreira Memorial Tournament saw two Shawnigan field hockey teams in action, with the seniors girls finishing in a three-way tie for first and the juniors also showing well in the developmental bracket.

On campus, five Shawnigan athletes joined players from around the Province for the 2nd stop in a fall elite Under-19 rugby sevens series. This developmental series saw many athletes reunited with teams from this year's Canada Summer Games, in which a handful of Shawnigan girls led team Central Vancouver Island to a gold medal.

In tennis, 29 players ventured to Mill Bay on Friday and Saturday for the annual Brentwood Invitational. This doubles event saw Nathan K. and his partner finish in third place overall, while Carolina M. and Leticia C. finished in 6th.

The junior boys soccer team also enjoyed the beautiful weather at Brentwood while competing in the ISA Championship. After a 2-0 start to their league, the boys finished in 4th in the competitive pool, after a narrow 1-0 loss to St. George's in the 3rd-place game.

Travelling across the Strait of Georgia, the Midget Prep ice hockey team split a pair of matchups against Delta Hockey Academy, with Delta winning 7-5 on Saturday and Shawnigan clinching a 3-2 victory on Sunday. The Midget Varsity squad, meanwhile, enjoyed home ice advantage to open their regular season, beating the Okanagan Hockey Academy 6-0 on Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday.

Shawnigan Athletes of the week were Josh V. (who contributed three goals and an assist over the two Midget Prep hockey games vs. Delta) and Sarah C. (who led the senior girls to a strong showing at the VIU volleyball tournament).

While most Shawnigan teams will take a break over the Thanksgiving weekend, the girls hockey team heads to a CSSHL showcase in Penticton and the Midget Prep team ventures to Winnipeg.
