Nine school teams in action
Nine teams represented the School, and many more enjoyed athletic pursuits in the beautiful sunshine, in one of the busiest weekends of the fall athletic calendar.

Shawnigan's senior girls volleyball team competed at an elite tournament at Brentwood, as they prepare for a key showcase game at BCS on Thursday.  Meanwhile, three members of the squash team entered the Vancouver Island Open – an adult tournament – with Lucia B. and Mitchell K. both earning strong results.

17 members of the Shawnigan swim team ventured to Richmond for the ISA championship on Friday.

Facing teams 60 athletes strong, Shawnigan produced a series of noteworthy performances, with Kate S., Hayley T., Nicole S., and Madoc T., all placing in the top seven in individual events.  The girls' 200m medley, boys' 200m freestyle, and mixed 200m freestyle relays also all showed well.

The squad will compete at the Island Zone meet next weekend in Victoria.

It was a busy week for the Grade 8 and 9 rugby programs.  On Thursday, the Grade 9s ventured to SMUS for the ISA rugby sevens championship.  Entering teams in both the A and B divisions, Shawnigan kept the ball alive and played strong defensively, winning both divisions.

The Grade 9s also travelled to Vancouver on Saturday for a matchup against St. George's.  With the A team playing a 15s game and the Bs playing 10s, the squads earned a win and a loss on a wonderful day of rugby and camaraderie.

Shawnigan's senior boys' hockey teams combined for a winning weekend.  Travelling to a CSSHL showcase in Banff, the Midget Varsity squad won three straight games, defeating Pilot Mound (3-0), International Hockey Academy (8-2), and Prairie Hockey Academy (8-5).  Rhys D. scored 9 points (5G + 4A) over the course of the weekend, as the team improved to 5-0 on the season.

Meanwhile, the School's Midget Prep team scored a pair of victories over Okanagan Hockey Academy's Red team.  Playing on home ice, Shawnigan won 2-0 and 5-1 to improve to 8-1-1 on the season – good for first place in the CSSHL's top division.

In field hockey, the junior girls entered a pair of teams as Shawnigan hosted the ISA Junior Championship.  In competitive play, the Junior A team finished fourth overall, showcasing the potential and growth evident in the program.  The Junior B team finished third in the developmental pool, as the girls enjoyed playing in front of their peers in one of their few formal tournaments of the year.

Meanwhile, Shawnigan's senior team produced its best weekend of the year, claiming first place at the UBC Invitational tournament.  After earning a 2-1 record in the round robin – including a 2-1 loss to Kelowna – Shawnigan dug deep to beat Kelowna 3-1 in the final.  "Things really started to look like a well-oiled machine," says Coach Andi Conroy, adding, "It's nice for the girls to have something tangible to build on as we head into the ISA tournament next weekend at Crofton House."

Shawnigan fields were awash in colour as the School wrapped up a busy weekend with Inter-house soccer on Sunday.  In a new format featuring concurrent finals, Strathcona and Lake's defeated Kaye's and Ripley's to earn a brother-sister house triumph.

During lunch on Monday, Director of Sport Tim Murdy announced Melanie B. (Senior girls field hockey) and Emilio S. (Gr. 9 boys rugby and Jr. boys soccer) as the School's athletes of the week.
