Shawnigan seniors dig deep

Shawnigan's senior girls are savouring a superb performance at the Provincial AA Championship, Nov. 7-9.

Ranked first in their pool after winning the Vancouver Island title, Shawnigan earned convincing wins over South Kamloops, LV Rogers, and SMUS to reach the quarter-final round without having conceded a goal.

After an impressive 2-0 win over York House in the quarter-finals, Shawnigan advanced to a remarkable dual with host Crofton House in the semis.

Featuring intense, back-and-forth action, the semifinal provided high quality field hockey, with Shawnigan taking an early lead and Crofton burying a late equalizer. Tied 1-1 after regulation time, the game proceeded to a five-player penalty shootout, and then a sudden-death round, before Crofton House ultimately prevailed.

With just two hours to spare before the bronze-medal game, Shawnigan's girls needed to overcome the emotions of the semifinal loss and refocus on the 3rd-place matchup.

"The character these girls showed was amazing," Coach Andi Conroy says of the response. "It's the type of lesson you just can't teach in a classroom."

Shawnigan proceeded to beat Seycove 2-0 to conclude the season with a victory and earn a meaningful podium finish.

With only one player on the roster with previous Provincial Championship experience, Coach Conroy says she was thrilled with the end result. "This is the proudest I've ever been of a group of students in my entire coaching career."
