Hosting the Robertson Winter Classic

Three Shawnigan hockey teams enjoyed high-level competition during the break.

During the final days of the holidays, Shawnigan hosted the 2nd Annual Robertson Winter Classic – a tradition initiated last year to honour Mr. David Robertson in his final year as Headmaster.

This year's event grew upon last year's single game, with seven visiting teams (including squads from San Jose, Los Angeles, and Everett) invited to compete in a full tournament format, spread between two divisions.   A special tournament livestream allowed more than 2000 fans to enjoy the action from across the world.

In the Under-18 division, Shawnigan's Midget Prep team built on the successes from the first half of the CSSHL season, winning the tournament title in Sunday's final against the L.A. Junior Kings.

Shawnigan Midget Varsity also impressed, finishing third in the Under-16 division. The San Jose Jr. Sharks earned the title in the U-16 event, beating the Everett Jr. Silvertips 6-5 in the final.

Shawnigan's Bantam Prep team continued its participation in a BC tradition, competing in the annual Pat Quinn Classic in Greater Vancouver, Dec. 28-30.

A week after earning a pair of wins at the Northern Showcase, Shawnigan's bantams finished the tournament with an 0-5 record.

The Girls' Prep team also received a dose of good news, despite not having any games over the break. Two athletes, Megan B. and Kiara S., have been named to Team BC for the upcoming Canada Winter Games. Maddie N. and Isabelle O., meanwhile, have been named to Team Yukon.  In boys' news, Ethan A. was named to Team Northwest Territories while Seiya T. claimed a spot on Team BC.
