Insights into Islam

Participating in intercultural dialogue
Shawnignan's budding philosophers are taking part in discussions on Islam and immigration to Canada.

As part of Philosophy 12, eight students ventured to Duncan on Wednesday evening for Insights into Islam, a panel discussion hosted by the Cowichan Intercultural Society.

Featuring a moderator and three panelists, all of whom immigrated to Canada, the discussion allowed speakers to discuss their faith as it relates to their experience as newcomers to the country.

After opening remarks from the panelists, the event broadened into a question-and-answer session among the roughly 60 community members in attendance.

Topics included education, volunteerism, and the role of the media. "Each of the speakers presented a really different idea of what being a Muslim means to them," one student said after the event. "I found that to be a really interesting and important idea to take away."
