Figure Skating Showcase

Shawnigan talent on display
Wednesday evening, spectators at the Charlie Purdey Arena were treated to a great show of talent as Ms. Peggy Ransom’s figure skating club took to the ice for the first annual Shawnigan Figure Skating Showcase.

The performance, which the Headmaster called “one of his highlights of the year,” saw six programs that included singles, pairs, and group skates. Ms. Ransom’s figure skating club, part of the Fine Arts program at Shawnigan, has been running for four years.

Keilen R. and Jazmin W. kicked off the evening with a fun 80s-fitness-inspired routine, followed by a beautiful short program from Hannah S. set to Florence and the Machine’s Breath of Life. Jazmin W. and Caitlyn B. brought high energy and a little ‘John Travolta flair’ to their routine from Grease. Keilen R. and Caitlyn B. returned to the ice with the popular Britney Spears Womanizer free skate. Hannah S. offered a graceful classical program for her second skate (Merry-Go-Round of Life by Joe Hisaishi, from the movie Howl's Moving Castle) that thrilled the audience with its spins and jumps. The final skate of the evening was an impressive routine from the synchronized skating team featuring Caitlyn B., Kamryn G., Benedikt H., Gordon K., Breanne P., Keilen R., Hannah S., and Jazmin W.

As one of the oldest sports on the Olympic Winter Games programme, figure skating sees athletes perform freestyle movements including jumps, spins, lifts and footwork on ice. An elegant combination of art and sport, figure skating tests athleticism, style and technical skill. Figure skating at Shawnigan offers skaters the opportunity to develop fundamental skating skills in the areas of ice dancing, free skating and interpretive skating. Interested skaters may also choose to pursue synchronized skating or pairs skating.
